Fredrikstad Animation Festival 2016: Full Programme

For its 2016 edition, Fredrikstad Aimation Festival will for the first time nominate a film in the short film category for the Amanda Award given at the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, Norway.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 10th

14:00 Student Film Competition, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of the 15 short films selected to be in the festival programme, which are in competition to win the Golden Gunnar for the best student film.

16:30 Short Film Competition 1 Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of 10 of the 18 short films selected to be in programme 1 and 2 in the short film programme. The films are competing for the Grand Prix and the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic-Baltic animated short.

18:00 My Life as Courgette, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of My Life as Courgette. A film about a nine-year-old boy, with a difficult childhood. When his mother suddenly dies after an accident, Courgette is forced to move to a new home.

21:30 Festival Opening, Venue: Litteraturhuset
This year's festival starts with the opening ceremony at Litteraturhuset in Fredrikstad. We set the mood with a selection of short films from our guests including our Guest of Honor, Gunnar Wille. Before the ceremony you are all welcome to the opening of the exhibition dedicated to Gunnar Wille located outside Egalia at the 2nd level of Litteraturhuset.

 FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11th

 10:00 Visual Storytelling: The Art of Cinematic Design with Jericca Cleland-Hura, Venue: Kino 3 / Fredrikstad Kino
Jericca Cleland-Hura's seminar exposes the power of images to build story, context, and emotion and presents practical techniques for structuring visuals to support cinematic narrative.

 12:00 In the World of Konstantin Bronzit, Venue: Kino 3 / Fredrikstad Kino
Russian Animator and Animation Director Konstantin Bronzit has been in the art and animation industry for more than 25 years. He has won over 200 awards for his short films and was nominated for the Academy Awards twice. During his presentation Konstantin will screen three films and will speak about his career and work process.

13:15 Commissioned Film Competition, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of the Commissioned Film Programme. The best film will be awarded with a Golden Gunnar.

14:00 360 VR Short Film Rain or Shine, Venue: Kino 3 / Fredrikstad Kino
Director Felix Massie and Project Leader Mark Davies from Nexus Studios London will outline the artistic and technical journey they experienced while making the interactive 360 immersive short film Rain or Shine, which is commissioned by Google as part of their Spotlight Stories VR project.

Screening of 8 of the 18 short films selected to be in programme 1 and 2 in the short film programme. The films are competing for the Grand Prix and the Golden Gunnar for the best Nordic-Baltic animated short.

 17:00 Mikrofilm 20 years - Retrospective, Venue: Kino 5 / Fredrikstad Kino
Mikrofilm, established in 1996, is one of the leading animation studios in Norway, and celebrates its 20th anniversary during Fredrikstad Animation Festival. The programme is a selection of films that represents the studio's diverse production, and early films which were created by the people behind the studio before it was established.

19:00 Mikrofilm: Personal Stories, Venue: Litteraturhuset
In this panel producers Lise Fearnley and Tonje Reiersen, and director Kajsa Næss will talk about the studio's short film productions, how to select the contents, which are important to the story, and which style to use to emphasize the film's themes.

20:00 Meet the Filmmakers, Venue: Litteraturhuset
Meet the people behind the short films screened during the festival. In a loose and relaxed atmosphere you have the possibility to socialize with professionals of the national and international animation scene.

 

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12th

Screening of the 15 short films selected to be in the festival programme. They are in competition to win the Golden Gunnar for the best student film.

 

11:30 Commissioned Film Competition, Venue: Kino 5 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of the Commissioned Film Programme. The best film will be awarded with a Golden Gunnar.

 

11:45 Short Film Competition 1, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of 10 of the 18 short films selected to be in programme 1 and 2 in the short film programme. The films are competing for the Grand Prix and the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic-Baltic animated short.

 

12:00 Children's Film Competition, Venue: Kino 3 / Fredrikstad Kino
A lot of animation is created for children. To ensure honours for films created for the youngest, the festival dedicates a special programme to children.

 

13:00 Den magiske juleesken, Venue: Kino 3 / Fredrikstad Kino
This film is about Julius, an eight year old kid, who lives in an orphanage outside Fredrikstad, and still believes in Santa Claus.

 13:30 Short Film Competition 2, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of 8 of the 18 short films selected to be in programme 1 and 2 in the short film programme. The films are competing for the Grand Prix and the Golden Gunnar for best Nordic-Baltic animated short.

15:30 Gunnar Wille Retrospective, Venue: Litteraturhuset
Throughout a long career in film and television Gunnar Wille has made a diverse resume. In this programme, we present movies and TV productions he has taken part in, while Gunnar himself will show things from his own perspective.

 17:30 Nordic Animation Forum, Venue: Litteraturhuset
In co-operation with the Swedish organization SAAVA, Finish Finnanimation, and Danish ANIS, we will present speakers who highlight the Nordic animation scene.

 21:00 Award Ceremony, Venue: Litteraturhuset

 To mark the conclusion of the Nordic-Baltic competition a grand ceremony will be held, where the Fredrikstad Animation Festivals award, the Golden Gunnar, will be presented to the winners of the categories best short film, best commissioned film, best student film, best children's film and the Grand Prix.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 13th

10:30 Winner Films, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
Screening of the Golden Gunner award winners.

14:00 Long Way North, Venue: Kino 4 / Fredrikstad Kino
A wonderful fairy tale from St Petersburg in 1892, where Sasha, a young Russian daughter of a wealthy man, is fascinated by her grandfathers adventurous life as an explorer.
