14th Special Animation Edition, Montreal: call for submissions

SODECCanadian screenwriters interested in animation are invited to submit to their script to the 14th Special Animation Edition.

Up-and-coming screenwriters interested in animation as well as animation specialists interested in screenwriting are invited to participate in the COURS ÉCRIRE TON COURT SPECIAL ANIMATION EDITION.

This edition is dedicated exclusively to both traditional and 3D animation. Applications should include the treatment or first draft of a screenplay, treatment notes, a description of the technique to be used, and from three to five visual elements or original illustrations.

The target format is an animated short film of five minutes or less.

An information session will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. at the SODEC for those interested in this special animation edition.

A pre-selection committee, to include a SARTEC representative, a WGC representative, as well as an animation filmmaker, will select seven finalists. The choice will be based on the quality of the project's narrative and visual elements and their cinematographic potential, as well as the author's vision.

A key component of the contest, these workshops will offer finalists the unique opportunity to benefit from advice from experienced screenwriters. As well, mentors will accompany participants throughout the contest to help with screenplay or treatment edits and rewrites.

Intended to be interactive, these sessions will take the form of work sessions and discussions, either on an individual or group basis and will take place on October 21 and 22, as well as on November 4 and 5 at the Maison de la culture Maisonneuve in Montréal.

Finalists will also have the opportunity to present their work to experienced producers in front of an audience of industry professionals. This presentation will be followed by a networking activity and an awards ceremony as part of the 11th Sommets du cinéma d'animation de Montréal, which will take place at the Cinémathèque québécoise at the end of November 2012.

After the final versions of the screenplays and visual materials have been submitted, a five-member jury will select the winners of the following prizes:

  1. The Grand Prix, worth a total of $8,000 for the best screenplay, includes the opportunity to attend the Annecy International Animation Film Festival all expenses paid by the SODEC, worth $3,000, where the winner will enjoy unlimited access to screenings and to various professional activities. As well the Prix à l'écriture cinématographique, worth $5,000, will be awarded by the CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec).
  2. The Prix SODEC/SARTEC, worth a total of $4,000 for the runner-up screenplay. The winner will attend the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with transportation and living expenses to be paid by the SODEC, worth $3,000, where the winner will enjoy unlimited access to screenings and to various professional activities. As well, the SARTEC will award the Prix spécial du jury worth $1,000.
  3. The WGC/JIMMY LEE Prize for the Best English Language Script, worth $1,000.
