SUBMISSION TOPICS
1. ANIMATION IN THE RAW
Exploring films and the work of filmmakers that are consciously operating against so-called 'rules of good filmmaking' in animation. This includes the analysis of reasons to choose technical and conceptual approaches that are traditionally considered 'poorly animated'. Creative decisions that accept and utilise techniques in different, non-conventional, often considered dilettantish, ragged or simply 'wrong' ways.
Who defines such rules of quality and excellence? Who, how and when might they change and, where are the boundaries of experiments, traditions and conventions? How can you find success 'In the Raw'?
2. ANIMATION AWARDS – FROM OSCARS TO FESTIVALS, THE AWARDS IN ANIMATION
Discussing the true value of awards for animated films and filmmakers, the tangible and the non-material value, its relevance and impact. Including international and national perspectives the focus may be on the selection processes and hidden motivations in potentially self-serving systems. Is there a narrow view on very few films and always the same people? Who and what kind of work is earning awards, how and why?
3. ANIMATION AND GAMES
Fuelling each other, overlapping, enhancing and even competing with each other animation and gaming are strongly connected fields. This convergence in animated media is spilling over the limits of artistic, commercial and scientific work. Traditional forms, techniques and aesthetics merge into new hybrids, expressions and channels.
To what extent are those interconnections extended to other types of media like films, apps, graphic novels and robotics? Which factors in the history and development of visual and acoustic elements between animation and gaming are important to be reviewed?
4. ZAGREB SCHOOL OF ANIMATION
Considering reflections on history, aesthetics and concepts of style and story structures in films associated with the Zagreb School of Animation. Which historical events led to the development of the Zagreb School? What are the influences and legacy of the Zagreb School in relation to style, storytelling and narrative concepts - worldwide - until today?
