Astigmatismo by Nicolai Troshinsky

In Astigmatismo by Nicolai Troshinsky, a boy, having lost his glasses, can only see one thing in focus at a time. His sight gets attracted by the sounds that surround him. He will have to explore a blurry world of unknown places and strange characters.

This feeling of feeling lost is created thanks to the extreme blur effect, in a way that you can only see in focus very tiny space. The focus point travels in synchronization with the sound and the music, allowing the viewer to explore a constantly changing landscape. The Spanish film entered the Annecy festival, in the short film official competition 2013.

Filming technique for Astigmatismo is peculiar, and complies with the story. The short is animated in paper cutout marionettes on five levels of glass. The bodies of the two main characters were animated in liquid paint on glass. There were no post-production effects apart from color correction, and all visual effects were done under the camera.

Shooting for the 4-minute, stop-motion project was possible due to a crowdfunding campaign which reached the mark of 3000 euros. The raised money was used to buy the necessary equipment to complete the shooting, and secure any necessary film rights.
