17 animators invited to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences

 The 2013 invitees in the field of animation and visual effects include:

Eric Darnell (Madagascar, Shrek), Brandon Oldenburg (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore), and  the Oscar-nominated PES for his short Guacamole are among the animators invited.

Simpsons' creator Matt Groening is another welcome addition.

Not all persons invited to the animation branch of the Academy are animators, but their place is well-deserved. Among them, the Canadian Marc Bertrand, who has produced Theodore Ushev's  Lipsett Diaries and Gloria Victoria.

Another NFB person, the composer Normand Roger (The Man Who Planted Trees, The Old Man and the Sea, Father and Daughter) also joins the animation branch of the Academy.

"These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today," said Academy President Hawk Koch. "Their talent and creativity have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, and I am proud to welcome each of them to the Academy."

 

Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2013.

 

Each year Academy members may sponsor one candidate for membership within their branch. New member application reviews take place in the spring. Applications for the coming year must be received by March 20, 2014.

 

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.
