19 animated features at the 2014 Oscars
Pixar has submitted the highly succesful Monsters University, and Disney has the upcoming Frozen as well as Planes. Dreamworks also enjoys two submitted features (The Croods, Turbo), and Sony Picture Animation has The Smurfs 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatball 2 in the list (the original film The Smurf had failed to qualify in the 2012 race due to insufficient animated sequences).
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment present the sequel Despicable Me 2, while Blue Sky Studios compete with Epic (photo).
European submissions include the César-awarded Ernest and Celestine (Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner, dir.), as well as the Goya-awarded O Apostolo (Fernando Cortizo dir.)
South Africa participates with Khumba, and Japan has three entries: A Letter to Momo (Hiroyuki Okiura), the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Rebellion, and Hayo Miyazaki's latest (and self-professed) last animated feature, The Wind Rises.
Brazil competes with the Annecy-awarded Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury, and the South Korean auteur Yeon Sangho enters the Oscar race with his adult animated film The Fake [more film info].
The Canadian feature The Legend of Sarila , the US-produced Free Birds and the Canadian feature The Legend of Sarila complete the list.
In the year of sequels (4 sequels have been submitted), there may be places for more independent/European films.
Miyazaki's The Wind Rises seems the more prominent candidate out of the non-US studio offerings for a nominee slot (Miyazaki has already won an Academy Award for his 2001 film Spirited Away).
