Animation in Europe: Two-Part Study, Facts and Figures

european-audiovisual-observatoryThe European Audiovisual Observatory will undertake a major study that will result in two unique publications on animation industry in Europe this year.

This EU project aims at refining the EU support policy towards the animation sector in Europe by providing data on the industry structure, operations and performance.

It aims to  to map out the landscape of the animation industry in Europe, working along with CARTOON and the Annecy-based City of moving images – CITIA.

The first part and publication, Animation Europe, will be presented during the 2015 Annecy festival (15-20 June)  and the MIFA animation market.

Lucia Recalde Langarica, Head of the MEDIA Unit, will open the workshop and present the context in which the European Commission decided to finance this research project and to mandate the European Audiovisual Observatory to carry out the research.

Animation Analyst, Marta Jiménez Pumareso (previously worked as executive producer and business consultant in the animation field) will present initial findings, looking at key indicators such as:

• The volume of feature animation produced in Europe
• The significance of European animation on television
• Performance of European animation

The Observatory's presentation of its study will be followed by a discussion on "Mapping the Animation Industry in Europe" with a panel of experts from the industry and the European institutions. Christophe Erbes, animation expert and consultant, will moderate this discussion.

According to Lucia Recalde, this will not only be a question of statistics.

She states the necessities: "Europe's animation industry is a source of creativity, which offers an untapped potential to develop innovative content and business models. A successful support policy for the European animation industry must be based on up to date market intelligence and an in depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing this industry. We believe this study will provide this much needed analysis of the sector."

The Observatory's Director, Susanne Nikoltchev announced that this research would provide for "some much needed transparency in today's European animation industry", a field which has developed into a vital part of the audiovisual sector – in terms of creativity, growth, and jobs. The Observatory has hired an to work on these two reports alongside Observatory Analysts Deirdre Kevin and Julio Talavera Milla. She will be aided in her work by an assistant, Elodie Jacques, recruited internally from within the Council of Europe.

The second publication, a more comprehensive study – Mapping the Animation Industry in Europe - will build on the data outlined in the first publication and provide a more in-depth analysis of the industry.

The results of the EU commissioned study  will be presented at a public conference in Brussels,  organised at the end of 2015 (results will also be published on the websites of the Commission).

The  Annecy event takes place on Wednesday 17th of June, 10.30 - 12.00, in the "Tente Impériale" Conference room (3rd floor), Centre de congrès de l'Impérial Palace, MIFA, Allée de l'Impérial, 74000 Annecy. Entry is free to anyone with a MIFA or MIFA journalist accreditation.
