'Memoirs of a Snail', 'Rock Bottom', 'Savages', 'Your Letter' in the 2024 BIAF Animation Feature Lineup

The 26th Bucheon International Animation Festival, (BIAF2024 25-29 Oct,2024) announces its feature competition. 12 animation features were selected out of 83 films submitted. This year, 7 of the selected films are from Asian countries, including 2 feature films from South Korea -this is a first for BIAF:  the number of Asian entries surpasses that of European and American works combined.

The Annecy winner, 'Memoir of the Snail' by Adam Elliot is here included, as well as the new features by Claude Barras (Savages) and the veteran French director Jean-François Laguionie (A boat in the garden). The selection of a South Korean feature 'Your Letter' as the opening film is also a first in the history of the BIAF.

Fureru by Nagai Tatsuyuki, Japan, 2024
Aki, Ryo, and Yuta, childhood friends who grew up on the same island, are 20 years old and start living together in Tokyo. Even though their living environments are different: they work part-time at a bar, work as salespeople at a real estate company, and are students at a vocational school for clothing designers, the three are always connected in their hearts.

Gill by Ahn Jaehuun, South Korea, 2024
Gon was on the verge of death when gills grew on his body, allowing him to breathe again. Kang Ha and his grandpa, who needed their own versions of gills to get through their lives, rescue Gon. They grow into a peculiar family together. Gill is a film that explores life's paradoxes, blessings, and curses. The film will encourage you to think about your own "gills” for getting through your life.

A Boat in the Garden by Jean-François Laguionie, Luxembourg, France, 2024
In the early 1950s, François, a young 11-year-old boy, is intrigued to discover that his parents are building a boat in their little garden, a replica of the famous sailor Joshua Slocum’s sailboat. As the years go by, in post-war France, François drifts from adolescence to adulthood. While the boat is being built, and with a tender and poetic look at his mother and father, the young boy embarks on his own adventure, one that will take him down his own passionate route of the sea and drawing.

Gridman Universe by Akira Amemiya,  Japan, 2023
Follows Yuta who repeatedly drew and then erased Gridman in his notebook, which he vaguely remembers. Then he decides to confess his feelings to Rikka, and their life in such a peaceful world begins to crumble with a roar.

Memoir of a Snail by Adam Elliot, Australia, 2024
In 1970s Australia, Grace's life is troubled by misfortune and loss. After their mother dies during pregnancy, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are raised by their paraplegic-alcoholic former juggler father, Percy. Despite a life filled with love, tragedy strikes anew when Percy passes away in his sleep. As the years pass, and despite new disappointments and sorrows, a glimmer of hope emerges when she strikes up an enduring friendship with an elderly eccentric woman called Pinky.

The Darwinners by Jean-Paul Guigue, Julien Berjeaut, France, Belgium, 2024


A father and his rebellious daughter are suddenly going to turn the Stone Age upside down. After a tragicomic round-trip to the future, they accidentally bring home an Ikea-like Allen key, the miracle that will finally open the threshold to evolution! It is going to lead them into a wonderful and yet catastrophic world.

Savages by Claude Barras, Swiss, Belgium, France, 2024
In Borneo, at the edge of the tropical forest, Kéria is given a baby orangutan. With the forest under greater threat than ever, Kéria, Selaï and the little primate, Oshi, will have to face many obstacles.

Into the Wonderwoods by Vincent Paronnaud, Alexis Ducord, France, Luxembourg,2024
10-year-old Angelo dreams of being an adventurer and explorer. Until one day, in the car with his family on their way to visit his beloved Granny, who is very ill, he is suddenly forced to show the extent of his bravery: Angelo decides to take a shortcut through the forest to reach his Granny’s house. He finds himself in a mysterious land inhabited by strange beings threatened by an enemy even worse than the local ogre.

Yuu Azuma, a high school girl, aims to be an idol. To achieve her dream, she sets four rules for herself: she will not be active on social media, she will not have a boyfriend, she will not stand out in school, and she will make friends with beautiful girls from the north, south, east, and west.

Rock Bottom by Maria Trenor, Spain, Poland, 2024


Through the music of Robert Wyatt, the animated musical ROCK BOTTOM plunges into the passionate love story of Bob and Alif, two young artists immersed in the creative whirlwind of the early 70s’ hippie culture.

The Storm by Zhigang Yang, China
Torrential rain leads you into a colorful world of traditional Chinese ink art. A century-old sunken ship emerges, mysterious theater troupes come to life again. With countless masks worn by people and a world filled with intricate changes, what kind of bizarre story is unfolding?

Your Letter by Kim Yonghwan, South Korea (Opening Film)


After helping a bullied friend and being bullied too, So-ri transfers to a new school in the countryside, where she discovers a letter from Ho-yeon, who used to sit in her seat.
