About Graphic Stories: Graphic Stories Cyprus is a Non-Profit Organization that has established the annual conference on Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Cyprus, under the same name, since 2015. Graphic Stories is the only established, independent, annual, official conference in the field of visual communication and visual arts, graphic design, illustration, typography, semiotics, animation, photography, multimedia design, internet and web design, calligraphy, branding, design in general. It aims to promote and raise awareness in relation to the visual arts, locally and abroad, and to encourage networking with cultural institutions, organizations, and contemporary art groups internationally.

It is an opportunity for meeting and interaction between designers in Cyprus and abroad on an annual basis. It also aims to cultivate visual literacy and the perceptual development of critical thinking about contemporary visual arts and related issues, both locally and internationally. Through the organization of conferences, lectures, exhibitions, workshops, and interactive installations it aims to demonstrate and promote the value of visual communication to the public and its connection to events in social fields. At the same time, the implementation of the above actions aims to cultivate professional empathy among visual communication designers in Cyprus.

The 10th International ConFest Graphic Stories invites you on an exciting journey into the world of visual communication. With a rich and innovative program, this significant event reflects the diversity and high quality of artistic and educational activities. Among the distinguished names are Savvas Chatzichristofis, Stefanos Karagkos, Mane Tatulyan, Agnieszka Ziemiszewska, Christos Nikas, Andreas Appios, Mike Hajimichael, Spiros Drakatos, Vaggelis Gettos, Pericles Cheng, and Panayiota Michael. Their diverse talents and innovative perspectives promise to enrich this milestone edition, offering attendees a unique and inspiring experience in the world of visual communication.

What the program includes:

CONFERENCE: Friday 8th of March: 14:00-21:30 (Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation)

  • 9 Lectures [in person & live streaming]: Renowned professionals of the creative field will deliver nine lectures exploring current topics that concern us all, such as the potential of artificial intelligence in artistic creation, the impact of mechanization on design, video games, powerful social media presence, and more.
  • Documentary [in person & live streaming]: Screening of a documentary on visual communication. The Graphic Stories documentary highlights its impact and significance in the world of visual communication, both in Cyprus and globally. Through unique stories of key figures who have left their mark on the conference and the revealing power of the arts, the documentary unveils Graphic Stories' commitment to promoting creativity, innovation, and pushing boundaries in the exciting world of design and technology. After the documentary screening, there will be a presentation of the 'Creative Europe' program by the Creative Europe Desk - Organization of European Programmes and Cultural Relations. The presentation will be conducted by the Planning and Development Coordinator of the Organization of European Programmes and Cultural Relations and Head of National Contact Points for the 'Creative Europe' and 'CERV' programs, Nenad Bogdanović.
    The event will continue with a Networking Reception, aiming to provide the audience with opportunities for the exchange of views, ideas, and relevant information.

FESTIVAL: Saturday 9th of March: 18:00-21:00 (Ground floor of Politis Newspaper)

  • International Poster Exhibitions: A retrospective poster exhibition showcasing the best posters from all thematic exhibitions of Graphic Stories to date, and a commemorative
    poster exhibition with the theme 'Destinat10n' featuring selected guest designers.
  • Interactive Installations: Creation of interactive installations themed 'Destinat10n' and celebration of Graphic Stories' 10th anniversary.
  • Live Performance: Experience an exceptional live performance by the contemporary dance team of the London School of Ballet.
  • Music Session: A musical experience with reggae beats by the unique DJ HajiMike.

WORKSHOPS: Saturday 9th &Sunday 10th of March hours and hosting place per workshop differs,
5 Creative Workshops [in person]: Scenario creation for video games by Spiros Drakatos, a specialized workshop on the use of artificial intelligence by Stefanos Karagkos, a human library workshop by Vaggelis Gettos, and workshops for children: an experience in virtual and augmented reality [AR/VR] by Pericles Cheng, and illustration-themed' Destinat10n' by Panayiota Michael.

The Overall Framework: The Graphic Stories ConFest will take place from March 8 to 10, 2024, with lectures, specialized workshops, and parallel activities. Exhibitions and interactive installations will last for a month. The events will be held at the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus, the ground floor of the 'Politis' newspaper, and STEM Education Cyprus, all located in Nicosia.

Inauguration of the 7th International Poster Exhibition & Awards Ceremony | Theme: The Power of Youth

Presentation of awards to the five [5] winners of the 7th Graphic Stories International Poster Contest and a poster exhibition featuring the 50 distinguished posters of the contest accompanied by 15 artworks by renowned designers. The contest received a total of 880 entries from 43 countries.

Interactive Installation
On the Inauguration Day of the poster exhibition titled The Power of Youth, an interactive installation will be waiting for the public at the conference venue. The purpose of the installation is to involve the public actively and consciously through a creative surprise game to discover through it the Power of Youth. The aim of this activity is to be the cause of encouragement for the whole community to actively participate in any new challenge by awakening enthusiasm in them, the courage and the power they harbour inside of them.

Six [6] specialised workshops await you the weekend before the lectures, to develop your skills and enrich your knowledge and portfolio, whether you are a professional or a student. Among these is the mental empowerment workshop for anyone who is or feels young! Of course, we do not fail to motivate children to get involved in the art of Animation and get familiar with the concept of Visual Communication through the established children's workshop.

All conference activities will take place at European University Cyprus, Nicosia. The conference will be held in person, while there will be live streaming for online viewing of the lectures. It is clarified that all workshops are exclusively held in person.

Costis Papatheodorou Workshop - Photorealistic Digital Painting for Beginners and Advanced

At this workshop you will learn: how to draw realistic black and white and colour portraits / the painting fundamentals (shape and form, light, colour and tone values) / how to take advantage of under drawing (imprimatura) / a solid foundation for any painting program such as Photoshop, procreate etc.  / photoshop tips, tricks and shortcuts. / Bring a laptop with a graphic tablet or tablet with a drawing app and a notepad & pen/pencil for notes. Please check in advance that the gear you will bring works.

The 6th Conference on Graphic Design &Visual Communication in Cyprus, Graphic Stories Cyprus, is on its way and it will take place from 6-8 of March, 2020 in Nicosia! The 6th in a row Graphic Stories Cyprus is the only established, independent, annual conference in the field of visual communication and the visual arts that covers the full spectrum of them, namely graphic design, illustration, typography, visual arts, semiotics, animation, photography, multimedia, internet and web design, calligraphy and design in general.

The 6th Graphic Stories Cyprus comprises eleven (11) lectures, five (5) creative workshops and one (1) international poster exhibition featuring designers from Cyprus and abroad. During this 6th event, special attention has been paid to the multifaceted actions aimed at covering and expressing all of the visual arts and its creators, with the special theme of the conference being its connection to the Cultural Heritage and Tradition through the international poster contest on 'Cultural Heritage, One World, One Future'.

The Conference on Graphic Design and Visual Communication in Cyprus, Graphic Stories Cyprus, was selected as one of Europe's best festivals by the European Festivals Association (EFA) and awarded the European Quality Stamp EFFE Label for the period 2019-2020.

Target Audience
The conference is addressed to all the visual communication designers and creators of applied and visual arts, professionals or students, graphic designers, web designers, illustrators, photographers, animators, 2D / 3D designers, printmakers, creative agencies, advertisers, marketers and their associates, as well as those interested in getting to know the profession of visual communications designer! The 6th Graphic Stories Cyprus, in 2020 will host eleven (11) lectures by major Cypriot and foreign creators covering a wide range of the Applied Arts, Visual Communication and Design:

• “From the hood to Hollywood” by Vassia Kalozoumi and Andrea Xenoulis from Corn Creative.
• “I used to be a graphic designer - The Path: From Inner Search to Multidimensional Reality” by Ioannis Fetanis.
• “Design for animation” by Katerina Pantela.
• “The steps to successful business networking” by Laki Argyrou.
• + Designer Andreas Panayi will talk about the concept behind the creation of the visual
identity of the 6th Graphic Stories Cyprus conference.

Poster exhibition
"Cultural Heritage, One World, One Future', is the title of the exhibition that will include the 50 distinguished artworks of the 4th International Poster Competition organized by Graphic Stories Cyprus. The exhibition to be hosted by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in Faneromeni, will also feature the artworks of 10 invited renowned artists. The inauguration and the awarding of the winners will take place on Friday, March 6, 2020, after the scheduled lectures. The prizes of the competition are offered by the Bank of Cyprus
together with the Greek company Parachute Typefoundry.

At the same time, two posters with the theme of the exhibition will also be hosted at the same venue created at the Art Poster Lab held last November at the American University of Emirates in Dubai. The workshop was attended by 20 students from AUE University and was
implemented under the guidance of Angeliki Athanasiadi and Andrea Panayi. Graphic Stories Cyprus is organized with the cooperation of the Bank of Cyprus and is under the auspices of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Municipality of Nicosia.

The prizes of the international poster contest are offered by the Greek Company, Parachute Typefoundry and the Bank of Cyprus.

2019 Event Coverage

The 5th Graphic Stories Cyprus, Conference on Graphic Design & Visual was held with great success between 15-17 of March 2019, with the partnership of the Bank of Cyprus. The opening of the conference took place on Friday 15 March at the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus. Dr. Katerina Lambrou, Head of the Press and Communication Office of the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus, referred to the utilization of the dynamics that has developed in recent years in the field of audiovisual both in Greece and in Cyprus, as a means of development, while stressing the state's support for any remarkable action centered on culture and arts.

Yiorgos Tsangaris, artistic director of the international festival of Animation of Cyprus, Views of the World, presented through artistic posters - his own and friends - many fruitful collaborations that were born from 2001 until today, aiming at the promotion of independent cinema. The presentation included collaborations with top artists of the international community regarding the design of posters for the festival. Illustrator Costis Papatheodorou in his lecture entitled "Revolution and Artists" answered questions related to the evolution of arts and their relation to the progress of technology, over time. How much revolution does a paint tube carry? How many artists does a graphic tablet launch? To conclude that rt advances hand in hand with technology and our perception follows.

The well-known designer and academic Costas Mantzalos, through a historical retrospection on Graphic Arts in Cyprus from 1960 until today, in a lecture of particular local interest, referred to the evolution of the design culture on the island, accompanying his presentation with visual material and examples of graphic arts in Cyprus from 1960 until today. Artist Irene Gonou talked about the power of words that protect through writing, as in many traditional societies and cultures they are said to have magical qualities and provide metaphysical protection. She presented her study of how poetic vocabulary replaces magical prescriptions by reviewing existing perceptions and reviewing the healing properties of art in modern society. The President of the Association of Cypriot Cartoonists, Sotos Voskaridis - BOSS with his distinguished humor, spoke about the value of cartoons as an educational tool, stressing that people's hope for a better society is School.

The journalist Apostolos Kouroupakis and internationally renowned designer Charis Tsevis presented for the first time to the general public the book "Graphic Stories" by Angeliki Athanasiadi, speaking of the importance, historical and educational role of books, especially in modern digital time. The album includes theoretical texts and articles, in the form of a chronograph, on education, visual communication and design, and also hosts presentations, interviews as well as works by great creators and designers of Cyprus and abroad.

The well-known illustrator and calligrapher Vladimir Radibratovic talked about the majesty of the letters and the playful search for their unique shape and form. He showed letters he created with the usual calligraphy tools and letters she drew from hair, flour, stones, clouds, and even coffee. The director, Konstantinos Kambouroglou, spoke about his documentary "How to Steal a Chair", which was screened on Saturday, March 16, at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. He explained how and why he started from New York, telling the story of Stergios Delialis and the legendary Design Museum of Thessaloniki and how he witnessed the last battle in a war that was lost 20 years ago.

"Love, Peace, Technology from Cyprus" was the title of the lecture by famous designer Charis Tsevis. The author, based in Anarita, Paphos, honouring and serving every one of these values, producing visual communication and expression for every (sunny and not so sunny) side of the planet. Elias Pantikakis of the award-winning creative office Beetroot Design Group, represented by himself and the co-founder of Beetroot, Yiannis Charalambopoulos, analyzed through his lecture entitled “Going hybrid” how the new media and tools are challenging traditional graphic design.

The programed lectures of the conference ended with the presentation of the most famous contemporary graphic designer, the man who challenged and rewrote all the rules of traditional graphic design and typography. David Carson, the "super star" of visual communication, was present at the 5th Graphic Stories Cyprus Conference, and sparked the audience not only with his creations but also with the immediacy and simplicity of his character which you rarely meet in professionals of this range. With the comfort of a Hollywood star, but at the same time accessible and sincere, he greeted the crowd that shuddered the lecture hall and paid the organizers' credit, saying "Congratulations, you have succeeded where others have failed", basically acknowledging with his "vote of confidence”, the serious and systematic work of all these years. David Carson unveiled some of his recent works, along with a brief review of his career, while analyzing the importance of using the intuition and uniqueness of a designer in each of his work.

The lectures were followed by the inauguration of the poster exhibition of the 3rd International contest by Graphic Stories Cyprus, entitled "Graphic Design, Challenging the Perception", as well as the winners' award. The contest gathered 800 posters from 27 countries from all over the world. The exhibition includes 50 distinguished works that emerged from the competition, as well as 16 artworks by remarkable designers including the world-renowned designer David Carson and Angeliki Athanasiadi, Adonis Papadopoulos, Andreas Pitsillides, Aristarchos Papadaniil, Irene Gonou, Kostas Kanellopoulos, Costas Mantzalos, Michalis Theocharides, Paris Koutsikos, Spyros Drakatos - Tonia Avgoustaki, Charis Tsevis, Chao Yang, Kirill Sukhanov, Nataliya Schigorets and Sina Afshar. The exhibition will be hosted by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation until March 31st.

In the international category of the contest for professionals, the winner was Luis Antonio Rivera Rodriguez from Mexico, while in the corresponding category of the contest for international higher education students, Kai Wang from China was the winner. In the category of the Cypriot higher education students, Andreas Panayi was the winner, while in the category of the Cypriot students of lyceums and technical schools the winner was the student Marilena Papakyriakou, who worked under the supervision of graphic art teacher Souli Christou. The prizes were offered by Bank of Cyprus and Parachute Fonts.

At the same time, on the same weekend, three specialized workshops were organized to provide accumulated and professional level knowledge and experience to the participating designers, professionals and students. The themes included calligraphy by Vladimir Radibratovic, improvised natural tools, traces and writing by Irene Gonou and digital illustration of a realistic portrait by Costis Papatheodorou. Also, two children's workshops were held, challenging the perception, by Panagiota Michael and cartoons by Sotos Voskaridis.

Graphic Stories Cyprus  conference is held under the auspices of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media of the Hellenic Republic and the Municipality of Nicosia.
