There’s a wealth of technical information online about how to produce believable character animation, but excellent theatrical animation is rooted in observing and understanding human behavior, a clear understanding of the story point in the scene, and of what makes most people laugh. In a two hour master class, animation director Alex Orrelle (Pixar, Warner Bros) will discuss and demonstrate the creative planning of an animated scene. The session will include a brief introduction about Alex’ experience in becoming an animator, and then a real-time demonstration of how to plan a shot with a line of dialogue: How to find the subtext of a dialogue line, the thought process and inspiration for acting choices and the practical steps for composing these ideas in animated sequence.
