Korean Animators Against the War

A big number of independent Korean animation artists and directors have published a statement on the war of Ukraine and the Russian invasion.

From Nari Jang (My Father's Room) to Seungbae Jeon (Saturday's Apartment) and more animation artists, they state that "war serves to destroy people's lives", and they urge for its stop -while at the same time they express their solidarity with the Ukrainian and Russian animation artists.

The full statement:

We are opposed to the war in Ukraine. Stop the war!

For the past two years, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill and helped us to realize the preciousness of life and one another as we are kept apart. It saddens us that now as we yearn to hear of the passing of the pandemic, we are met instead by the tragic news of war. War serves to destroy people’s lives, their homes, and their way of life. The war in Ukraine must come to an end immediately. Though we are but ordinary people, we can’t be still while we are aware of the tragedy that is unfolding in Ukraine. 

Korea knows the pain that is brought on by war only too well. We have lost family, friends, and neighbours to war through the history. To this day, the suffering of war remains as a painful scar in Korean society. We hope that such a tragedy will not be visited upon Korea, Ukraine, Russia, or any other country again, nor do we wish to see the pain caused by war being passed on to the next generation.

Animation is an artform that breathes life into pictures, objects, and the moments of our lives. As animation creators, we pour our hearts and souls into our work, holding dear all things that come to life through movement. As both creators and as individuals who know well the preciousness of people and longing for one another, we wish to see an immediate end to the tragic war taking place at this moment.
