Altötting, Rivages and Elo Take Home 2020 Cinanima Awards

Andreas Hykade, from Germany, was awarded the Grand Prize CINANIMA 2020 – the International Animated Film Festival of Espinho. This director used his childhood memories to make this short film, Altötting, about a boy who fell in love with the Virgin Mary and a story full of metaphors that won the Jury – Manuel Mozos, Florence Miailhe and Jayne Pilling. Altötting is the name of the village where Andreas Hykade was born and it is also one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Germany, due to a healing miracle and an extraordinary image of Virgin Mary.

In the International Competition, which featured 68 films, the jury highlighted Rivages, by Sophie Racine, a French director and illustrator, who was given the Jury’s Special Award. With sensitivity and charm this film has a remarkable capacity to evoke the emotions of memories.

Finally, there were three Mention Awards to Metro, by Valentin Tyuterev,  from Russia; Apfelmus, by the Austrian Alexander Gratzer; and Folie Douce, Folie Dure, by Marine Laclotte, from France.

White Horse, by Yujie Xu, from the United Kingdom was awarded the Prize for Best Student Film; and The Nose or the Conspiracy of Mavericks, by Andrey Khrzhanovsky, was chosen as the Best Feature Film.

In the national competition, among 29 films, Elo, by Alexandra Ramires, won the António Gaio Award, while Decapitada, by a group of students from Escola Básica e Secundária Dr. Machado de Matos, and Walkthrough, by Sofia Salt, were distinguished with the Prize Young Portuguese Director.

Alexandra Ramires’s first short film depicts two characters who try to adapt to each other and has already been awarded in Curtas Vila do Conde; Animatou, in Switzerland; and in the Chicago International Film Festival, in the United States. It is no surprise that the jury – Bruno Caetano, Paulo Gomes and Vier Nev – gave Alexandra the most important prize in the national competition.

This year’s edition of CINANIMA, which started on 9th November and ended this Sunday, was held exclusively online
