Quirino Awards 2021: The Nominees

Chosen from among 265 applications, 40 works from 9 countries are still running for a place among the finalists, which will be selected by an international jury. The finalist works in the nine categories will be announced on March 17th at Casa de América in Madrid.
 
Spain leads the list of countries with the most nominations (22), followed by Argentina (13), Chile (9), Mexico (8) and Colombia (7). Among the nominees there are also works from Brazil, Portugal, Costa Rica and, for the first time, from the Dominican Republic. The feature film “Nahuel and the Magic Book”, the second season of the “Petit” series -both from Chile-, and the Spanish short film “Homeless Home” have the highest number of nominations, with four each. Mexico, Spain and Argentina lead the categories of Feature Film, Short Film and Commissioned Film, respectively.
 
The works that will seek a place among the finalists for Best Animated Feature Film are the Mexican “Xico's Journey” by Erick Caballero (produced by Cristina Pineda Antúnez), “A Costume for Nicholas” by Eduardo Rivero (Fotosintesis Media), "Cranston Academy; Monster Zone” by Leopoldo Aguilar and “The League of 5” by Marvick Eduardo Núñez Aguilera, both produced by Ánima; Chile's “Nahuel and the Magic Book” by Germán Acuña Delgadillo (Carburadores) and Argentina's “Lava” by Ayar Blasco (Crudo Films) are also nominated in this category.

With four nominations, Spanish animation leads the category of Best Animated Short Film: “Homeless Home” by Alberto Vázquez (Uniko, Autour de Minuit), “Mad in Xpain” by Coke Riobóo (Los Animantes), “Roberto” directed and produced by Carmen Córdoba González and “Routine: the Prohibition” by Sam Ortí (Hampa Studio). The Portuguese "Tie" by Alexandra Ramires (Bando à Parte, Bap Animation Studios) and the Colombian "It's All the Salt's Fault" by María Cristina Pérez, produced by Mauricio Cuervo Rincón, will also choose a place among the finalists of this category.

The jury made up of the French Jean François Tosti (TAT productions), the Portuguese Joana Toste (animator and director), the Brazilian Paula Taborda (Planeta Junior) and the Spanish Sergio Jiménez (Pinkman.TV) will choose the three finalist works in each category. A committee made up of Agnieszka Kowalewska-Skowron, Loïc Portier, Sydney Padua, Paco Rodríguez and Ylka Tapia was in charge of selecting the nominated works.

Located on the island of Tenerife, the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna will be the new venue location of the Quirino Awards from this edition. Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999, La Laguna is one of the island's references in cultural matters, with several institutions, theaters, museums, and a university.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the Quirino will once again bring together animation professionals at the Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum, which will take place between May 27th and 29th in La Laguna. In 2020, this industry activity brought together representatives of a hundred companies from 19 countries - including production companies, sales agencies, tv channels and distributors - who held more than 800 B2B meetings. Entries to participate in the forum will open in the coming weeks on the Quirino Awards website.
 
With the aim of offering a historical record of the awards, the organization has launched a search engine for the finalist and award-winning works in the different Quirino categories throughout its three editions. The search can be carried out from the "Palmares" tab on the Quirino Awards website using different filters such as edition, country or category.

About Quirino Awards
The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed "El Apostol"; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.
