Animafest Zagreb 2019: Selection Results and Panorama Section

Animafest Zagreb 2019: Selection Results and Panorama Section

After reviewing more than 1800 submitted films from 86 countries around the world, World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb presented the official selection results for the Grand Competition - Short Films, Croatian Competition and Student Film Competition, as well as its Panorama section.

Besides Daniel Šuljić, artistic director of the Festival, the selectors in category of Grand Competition - Short Films were Dea Jagić and Krešimir Zimonić, while Tea Stražičić and Dino Krpan took part in selection for the Student Film Competition.

Phil Mulloy competes with In the Future, Regina Pessoa returns with Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days, while the recently awarded Under the Rib Cage by the Belgian Bruno Tondeur all appear in the Shorts Competition Section.

Franck Dion competes with Per Aspera De Astra, Thomas Renoldner with Don't Know What, and Tomek Popakul with Acid Rain.

From Canada (Abeo by Brenda López Zepeda) to Korea (Love at the Crossroads by, Hee-seung Choi), there are a lot of films to explore in the student section, whereas 20 films compete in the Croatian competition (Martina Meštrović, Lucija Mrzljak, Joško Marušić,Ivana Bošnjak, Thomas Johnson, Petra Zlonoga, Sandro Toth some of the names).

UPDATE 27.03
However, the biggest festival surprise is the Panorama section. According to the festival description, " World Panorama is a diverse non-competitive programme  [...] a collection of original, innovative and daring titles that will offer a broad insight into the recent global production of specifically narrated films". The line-up of 24 films looks like an A-list of animation directors who could have easily fit into the competition programme (and some of them have already featured in other festival competition programmes - and garnered awards).

Jochen Kuhn, Anu-Laura Tuttelberg, Luca Tóth, Dahee Jeong, Nienke Deutz, are all there with either new films or films already premiered at  different festivals.
