Annecy Festival Short Animation Film Selections 2026: The Full List

Annecy Festival 2026 short film selection animation
Cosmonauts / Cartoon Physics / Water Girl

34 animation shorts were selected for the 'shorts film official' section of the 2026 Annecy Animation Festival (this year: 21-27 June 2026).

This was a culmination of a scaled announcement of films in a 5-day period. Graduation animation films (43 overall) were first announced, followed by TV Films (29 animation film selected ) and Commissioned Films (35 animation shorts), with the official short competition to follow -along with its side categories, Perspectives and Off-Limits. (New info: the Midnight Shorts and WTF categories will have their own award, the festival announces).

The official selection looks like a 'who's who' of indie animation. Oscar-nominated Koji Yamamura is here, with his new film 'The Spring Sea'; the Swiss veteran Georges Schwizgebel returns with the painterly (which matches its theme), 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray'.

The Oscar-nominated duo of Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata (Negative Space) comes to the French city with their new puppet film, 'Cartoon Physics'. And it's always interesting to see what UK author Elizabeth Hobbs will do of the 1920 Katherine Masfield short story, 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel'.

The Berlin-premiered, 3-story queer opus 'Cosmonauts' by  Leo Černic is there, and Anca Damian (Crulic, The Magic Mountain) returns with her 18-minute 2D/3D 'Motherhood'.

The commissioned films competition is another who's who of animation festival trailers (which need some recognition on their own), including Anima Festival, Anibar Festival, and MONSTRA Festival.

The 2026 Festival Poster by Canadian Randall Finnerty

Randall Finnerty is a visual artist originally from Northern Ontario, Canada. He has lived in Montreal since 1992, where he worked for 24 years at the National Film Board of Canada as Technical Advisor on numerous award-winning animated short films. Annecy Festival 2026 poster

“While searching for an image that captures the spirit of the Annecy Festival, I combined my love of eccentric animals engaging in human-like behaviour with a gathering of native birds from the Haute-Savoie region – a spiral pilgrimage that reflects the diversity of people bound by a common love for cinema and animation film.”

Annecy International Animation Film Festival takes place from 21st to 27th June 2026 in Annecy, France
