Meet the Jury of the 2016 BIAF
The Bucheon festival has already selected its short films for competition (see the complete list here) . With feature competition films to be announced 7 September, here's the jury lineup for the 2016 Korean animation fest:
Feature Films
Benjamin Legrand / Writer (France): He is the book author and scriptwriter of April and the Extraordinary World (Annecy Cristal Feature 2015) originated by Tardi. He is also the author of Snowpierce, filmed by Korean director Bong Joon-ho with the film title Memories of Murder.
Raúl Garcia / Director (USA): Character animator on modern classics as Aladdin, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas and Fantasia 2000 at Disney. He recently made the animated feature Extraordinary Tales based on Edgar Allan Poe stories.
Jacques-Rémy Girerd, Director, Producer (France): A founder of Folimage Studio and l'Ecole de la Poudrière. He has directed Mia and the Migou, Raining Cats and Frogs, and acted as producer for M. Dudok de Wit's The Monk and the Fish (1994), Konstantin Bronzit's At the Ends of the Earth, Regina Pessoa's Tragic Story with Happy Ending, and the Folimage features A Cat in Paris and Phantom Boy.
Rhee Soue-won / Programmer Busan International Film Festival (South Korea): Film Critic and Programmer focusing on World Cinema at Busan International Film Festival.
Short / TV&Commissioned Films
Lee Sung-gang / Director (South Korea): Director of features My Beautiful Girl, Mari (Annecy Cristal 2002), Yobi, the Five
Tailed Fox, and recently made Kai (2016) also selected in Annecy 2016, and shorts Ashes in the Thicke, O-Nu-Ri, A Monster in the Reservoir and Aksim.
Paola Orlić / Producer the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb (Croatia): Paola Orlić is the producer of the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb, art historian and independent curator.
Chris Robinson / Artistic Director Ottawa International Animation Festival (Canada): Chris Robinson is a writer, and artistic director of the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF). He also wrote the screenplay for the award-winning animation short, Lipsett Diaries, directed by Theodore Ushev. Robinson writes The Animation Pimp column and Toon of the Month for Sight and Sound magazine.
Robinson has authored thirteen books including Unsung Heroes of Animation (2005), Ballad of a Thin Man: In Search of Ryan Larkin (2008), Animators Unearthed and Japanese Animation: Time Out of Mind (2010). He is currently writing My Balls Are Killing Me, a graphic memoir about his experience with cancer along with a novel, Drivin'.
Graduation / Online
Arai Fuyu / Director (Japan): Film Director. Works as a director in Robot inc. after graduating from Musashino Art University. Has received recognition worldwide over developing new techniques in film making. Works for various types of films such as TV Commercials, Music Videos, Web Advertisements, etc. "Tissue Animals (2013)" won the Cristal d' Annecy (Commissioned films) in 2014, and, ADFEST 2014 Bronze, One Show 2014 Silver, and more awards. His recent works, "Future with bright lights" got over 20 million plays on internet.
Yoon Young-doo / Professor (South Korea): He teaches as vice-captain at University-industry cooperation and president at Digital Media Center of Kangwon National University. He is also an executive director at The Korea Contents Association, a member of education committee at Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, and a director of The Korean Society of Cartoon & Animation Studies.
Sarah Saidan / Director (UK): She wasborn in 1978. She started her studies with graphic design but later found the most pleasure in making animation films. She got her Master's degree in Animation from the University of Art in Tehran, Iran (2004). She moved to France in 2009 to study at La Poudriére, Valence.
Her graduation film « Quand le chat est la... » (2011) was selected at Clermont-Ferrand short film festival. Her last short film, Beach Flags (2013), won the prix Ciclic, prix "La Résidence" Folimage, prix Arte France in Pitchs Mifa 2012. A co-production between Folimage and Sacrebleu, the film won the Grand Prize at BIAF 2015 as well as numerous prizes worldwide and has screened in more than 100 film festivals. Sarah currently lives in France and continues filmmaking.
The 18th Bucheon International Animation Festival takes place 21-25 October 2016.
