Animocje Festival 2021: Programme Highlights

For this milestone anniversary of the always reliable and now expanding Animocje Festival (18-24 April 2021,Bydgoszcz, Poland), there are more screenings and events accessible online. The festival will be entirely available on the new VOD platform - KULTUREO.PL.

Premiere screenings of animated feature films, special screenings of shorts, meetings with artists, workshops and a novelty: visits to some Polish workshops and studios of animation await both industry professionals and the audience. 

The main part of the festival program are competition screenings. Every year, a few hundred animated films from dozens of countries compete for Grand Prix - the Bydgoszcz Award
for the Best Animated Film.The authors compete in the International Competition and Kids Film Competition, out of 700 films submitted.

The winners will be selected by the Jury consisting of Adriana Prodeus, Waltraud Grausgruber, Mr. Kropka, Ola Szmida and Marcin Szpak. An award of the Junior Jury will also be handed by chosen high school and university students.

During the festival, two Polish premiere screenings will take place: A Colourful Dream by Jan Balej and The Old Man: The Movie by Oskar Lehemaa and Mikk Mägi.

A troupe of buskers lands on an island governed by a despotic ruler with strict police control. When, during their performance, a shot fired from a circus cannon goes astray, it triggers a series of unexpected events - A Colourful Dream Synopsis

Feature animation films like My Favorite War (dir. Ilze Burkovska-Jacobsen), Fritzi: A Revolutionary Tale (dir. Matthias Bruhn, Ralf Kukula), Beauty Water (dir. Cho Kyung-hun) compete at the festival.

Curatorial screenings will combine unique sets of short films prepared by the festival guests, devoted to chosen subjects. There are seven sets of this kind planned, including one dedicated to contemporary animated films of Austrian female animators (curated by Waltraud Grausgruber). Kathrin Steinbacher, one of the participating tribute directors, talks about In Her Boots film:

Subjective TOP 11  is another Animocje festival tribute prepared by Ola Szmida; films with soundtrack composed by Krzysztof Penderecki is curated by Adriana Prodeus,  and Great Animation for Great Music is curated by Mr. Kropka aka J.S. Álvarez).

Online screenings for children will be accompanied by additional educational content; explanations of film themes, prepared by educators, will be available to facilitate further discussion with young viewers on the topics raised in the movies presented. The Polish workshops visits have the audience observe animators during their work and learn some secrets of their occupation. The audience will see six places, look into large and small studios, and into some one-man workshops as well.

Video game fans will ensure a presentation of Museum of Consoles and Video Games in Bydgoszcz, which will take you to a nostalgic journey to the world of old video games. You will learn about a new trend among gamers: returning to the past, which may also be a journey to the future of video games, as more and more of new titles are inspired by the early games. Both new and retro games will be discussed by Piotr Bieńkowski (the former head of the iconic magazine The World of Computer Games) and Konrad Baśkiewicz (the founder of Museum of Consoles and Video Games in Bydgoszcz), and the meeting will be hosted by Paweł Schreiber (Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz).

Animocje is the only Polish festival granting the Dubbing Achievement Award. Actors awarded during the previous editions were: Jarosław Boberek, Joanna Jabłczyńska, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Wiktor Zborowski and Krzysztof Kowalewski, and the name of this year laureate will be announced soon.

Play-off! kicks off 6th April -when the platform kultureo.pl is launched - for films that were not selected to the main competition, but still have a chance to compete for the awards; the title that gets the most votes of the public will enter the International Competition. This year, Play-off program includes 31 films from all over the world: India, Hungary, France, Estonia, USA, Russia, Norway, Spain or Argentina.
