Programme of SAS Symposium on Adaptation: 2014 ITFS Stuttgart

This one-day academic symposium on "Adaptation: Animation, Comics and Literature" is  held at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2014 in collaboration with the Society of Animation Studies, the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, the Institute of Media Studies at Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen, the AG Animation and the Literaturhaus Stuttgart.

Comic characters and stories serve as source material for major Hollywood blockbusters. Films are accompanied by comic adaptations and/or novelizations. Very often films are being promoted in a trans-media campaign, which includes prequels, sequels and side projects in the form of animation, comics or books.

There is also a rich history of adaptations of classic and contemporary literature for independent animated short films or animated feature films. The rapidly growing graphic novel field also provides an abundance of examples of literature adaptations.

The animation historian and theorist Paul Wells (Louhgborough University) will open the SAS Symposium event with his keynote address: "Comfort in caricature: Adapting British comics into Cartoons".

Talks on Miyazaki's My Neighbour Totoro (Raz Greenberg), Shakespeare animated (Hannes Rall on As You Like It), adaptation of Sherlock Holmes to video games (Maria Katsaridou) are among the themes discussed.
