10 Animation Shorts for the Oscar 2017 Race

ampas-logoThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 89th Academy Awards®. Sixty-nine pictures had originally qualified in the category.

The Annecy-awarded The Head Vanishes by Franck Dion, which tells the beautifully quirky story of an old woman losing its head (read Franck Dion's interview) is among the candidates.

The visual fable of Blind Vaysha by Bulgarian-Canadian auteur Theo Ushev brings in vivid contrast the dilemma of a girl torn between an eye who looks at the past and another eye looking at the future.

Another French film, the political Under Your Fingers (Sous tes doigts) by Marie-Christine Courtès vies for a place in the final nominees.

The Czech student film Happy End by Jan Saska, a bleak comedy which premiered at the Quinzaine des Realisateurs, is another surprise.

Another student film, Once Upon a Line by the Polish Alicja Jasina (USC student), which won the Student Academy Award for Best Animated Short, now competes for the 89th Academy Awards.

Pixar's Piper (Alan Barillaro) and Disney's Inner Workings (Leo Matsuda) are understandably included in the list, and they are strong favorites for a place in the final nominees.

After Disney's Feast, director Patrick Osborne has a new, Google Spotilight stories with the 360 rotation effort Pearl.

The Kickstarter-funded Pear Cider and Cigarettes by Robert Valley  is a 32-minute (!) Canadian animated film based on a true story of decadence and life journey.

Internet sensation Borrowed Time by Pixar animators Andrew Coats and Lou Hamou-Lhadj has found its place in the list as well.
