Hayao Miyazaki The Wind Rises
Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) is based on the manga of the same name by Hayo Miyazaki appearing in the magazine Model Graphix in 2009. The manga is itself based on a short story by Tatsuo Hori, which fictionalizes the life of Jiro Horikoshi. He was the man who designed the Zero fighter plane, used in the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack.
The film first acquired buzz when Studio Ghibli anounced that this will be the last film for the celebrated auteur . Complaints were also made for depicting the country's militaristic past and the dangers of changing its pacifist constitution..
Now an Oscar-nominated film (Best Animated Feature), The Wind Rises is more sober than the latest directorial effort of Ponyo (2008).
Joseph Gordon-Levitt voices Jiro Horikoshi in the English version, along with Emily Blunt (Naoko Satomi), John Krasinski, William H. Macy, Mandy Patinkin, Stanley Tucci, Elijah Wood and Werner Herzog as Castorp.
