6 Animation Features for Animafest Zagreb 2025

Balentes Italian animation film still
Balentes, Giovanni Columbu

Animafest Zagreb revealed its animation feature selection for its 2025 edition ( 2-7 June 2025). The Oscar-awarded 'Flow' by Gints Zilbalodis is included in the selection. Adam Elliot and his quirky-naughty signature style, 'Memoir of a Snail' (an Oscar-nominated animation feature) are part of the Animafest Zagreb selection.

More stop-motion films, like the Czech/Slovak/French co-production 'Living Large' by Kristina Dufková, feature in the selection. Brothers Quay feature with their latest 'Sanatorium under the sign of the hourglass'.

A ghostly train journey on a forgotten branch line transports a son, Jozef, visiting his dying Father in a remote Galician Sanatorium. Upon arrival, Jozef finds the Sanatorium entirely moribund and run by a dubious Doctor Gotard, who tells him that his father's death, the death that has struck him in his country, has not yet occurred, and that here they are always late by a certain interval of time, of which the length cannot be defined. - Film Synopsis

The 68-minute Italian 'Balentes' by Giovanni Columbu is a WWII drama, involving two children in challenging situations. The sole Asian entry in the lineup, 'Invisions' by Shunsaku Hayashi, comes from an experimental 'painted' animation filmmaker (his 2017 'Interstitial' won the Slamdance Grand Jury Prize for Animation Short).
