Bozzetto's 'Allegro non Troppo' Restored, Gets US Premiere
Bruno Bozzetto's Italian animation feature classic (and the answer to Disney's 'Fantasia'), 'Allegro non Troppo (1977) comes again to the cinemas, in its restored, 2K version. GKIDS has bought the North American rights to the Italian master's catalogue. The New York premiere screening is on 27 March 2025 (Metrograph).
Debussy, Dvorak, Ravel, Sibelius, Stravinsky, and Vivaldi vie for attention -and on top of that, a very uneasy conductor in the live-action segments of the film. More raucous and sad at the same time, 'Allegro non Troppo' gets the joy of life in a world that is constantly changing.
Imitation is the sincerest form of parody in Bozzetto’s silly symphony send-up of Fantasia, comprised of six segments scored to tunes by Debussy, Dvorak, Ravel, Sibelius, Stravinsky, and Vivaldi. Witness a new civilization spring into being from the residue in a soda pop bottle left behind by space travelers, an aging satyr struggle to recapture the vitality of his distant youth, a telling of the Adam and Eve story that’s miles away from anything ever taught in Sunday school, and many other churlish and cheeky delights besides in this, the best-known work from a maestro of animated anarchy, newly restored and celebrating its 50th anniversary - Film Synopsis
