'Luna Rossa' by Priit and Olga Pärn: First Images and Trailer
The legendary Estonian animation director Priit Pärn (Breakfast on the Grass, Hotel E, 1895, Night of the Carrots) and his constant collaborator and co-director since 2006 Olga Pärn return to the festival circuit with their new, co-directed 2D animation film 'Luna Rossa', a film that has Italy in its center in its 32-minute running time.
Olga and Priit Pärn last hit the festival circuit in 2014, with their 'Pilots on their way home', a multiply acclaimed film. In the subsequent years, they were still busy contributing animation short films in animated anthologies (such as the 4-minute, 2016 short 'The Eyeless Hunter: A Khanty Story' [Estonian National Museum] or the animated segment of 'Summer' in the Koji Yamamura-led 2017 'Vivaldi's The Four Seasons animation project).
'Luna Russa', a co-production between the Estonian Joonisfilm Studio as the main producer (Kalev Tamm) and the French Miyu Productions (Emmanuel-Alain Raynal, Pierre Baussaron) will soon make its appearance (appropriately) in the Italian Imaginaria International Animated Film Festival (Conversano, Italy, 21 August 2024).

Is there still a hint of forgotten Love in the air?
And the Moon? The Moon is just a witness. Still pale. - Film Synopsis
The Naples-set film took nearly 4 years to complete. Actors and a motion capture system were used to record the actors' movements (Karolin Jürise, Tanel Saar, and Ago Soots /VAT theater) on the computer as 3D puppets; however, the result is still a 2D-drawn film.
This combination of different disciplines is what usually makes animation interesting. Priit Pärn staged the choreography in collaboration with Tanel Saar, while actors responded with devotion to the project.
The story itself lends to a surveillance story involving four characters, two men and two women. Both directors understandably leave the film's narrative direction (and ending) open. In the meantime, here are some exclusive visuals from the film.
Luna Rossa, Olga and Priit Pärn
'Luna Rossa' will have its first encounter with the audience in the Italian fest, with other international festival appearances and an Estonian premiere to follow. As the directors say about their 21 August Imaginaria Festival premiere: "The film is ready for us only when we see - hear the reaction of the full hall to it. What could be better than the real - Italian audience reacting first to our pseudo-Italian film! '
There is indeed something very Italian in the film's intriguing trailer, listed below. We expect the same level of quirky comedy and bizarre situations that the directors' other films embody as their trademarks.
