43 Animation Shorts for 3D Wire Fest 2020
A total of 24 countries from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania will be represented in its two competitions: the Spanish one with 11 works and the International one with 32 titles. Productions recognized in the great cinematographic events such as the Oscar Awards or festivals such as Locarno, Annecy or Malaga, will fight for the recognitions granted by both the jury and the audience attending the screenings that will take place in Segovia between September 28th and October 4th. As a novelty, La Cárcel competition sessions will have their replicas on Friday, October 2nd and on Saturday, October 3rd in an open-air drive-in movie theater.
In the national section there are 9 Spanish productions and another two in co-production with France and Brazil, respectively. Among the directors, names already known for the contest such as César Díaz Meléndez who returns with Bellzebub after being selected last year and having obtained the Goya Award nomination for his short film Muedra; an animator who has participated in major productions such as Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, Charlie Kaufman's Anomalisa or Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs. Juan Carlos Mostaza also returns to the festival with Reflection, after his participation in 2016 through Down to the Wire.
One of the main names of the contest is the canary Elio Quiroga, this renowned filmmaker and writer will compete with Whence Comes the Rain. More than a hundred international recognitions (including the Goya Award nomination and the Oscar pre-selection for two of his short films) endorse the career of this multifaceted artist who has been praised by filmmakers of the stature of Quentin Tarantino.
Cinema made by women gains space and a total of five female filmmakers will be represented in this edition. The Brazilian Camila Kater will be one of them, with one of the most awarded animation works of the year: Flesh; recognized in multiple festivals inside and outside of Spain, Locarno, Annecy, Málaga or Huesca are just some of them. For her part, the 2016 Goya nominee María Lorenzo will be present with Urban Sphinx; while Begoña Arostegi will present her second work at the direction Me. The fourth on the list will be Carmen Córdoba with her debut feature: Roberto, and Carla Pereira completes the poker with Metamorphosis, a work she directs together with Juanfran Jacinto and winner of a Silver Biznaga at the last Malaga Festival.
Among the rest of the participants there are also strong names such as Abel Carbajal or David Orellana. Carbajal has been selected with The Great Corelli, which is his last short film as student at ESCAC and thanks to which he caught the attention of the great American studio: Laika (Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings), for which he is actually working. For his part, Orellana will put up his second work The Terrible Girls, a fantastic story that comes after his debut film: Secret Seekers.
The list is completed by Mad in Xpain by Coke Riobóo, a work where the animator returns to the style and technique of his previous work (Made in Spain -2017-) with which he was nominated for the Goya Awards; an award he received in 2007 for El viaje de Said.
THE BEST INTERNATIONAL HARVEST
The international competition will show cinematography as diverse as those from South Korea, Australia, Finland, India or Portugal, among others. A total of 32 works that show a still photo of current animation, an immersion for the viewer in all kinds of narrative techniques and structures. The selection includes internationally multi-award winning productions such as Daughter by the Czech Daria Kashcheeva (a short film nominated for an Oscar this year), Why Slugs Have No Legs by the Swiss Aline Höchli or Apfelmus by the Austrian Alexander Gratzer.
A list of directors that mixes established figures and emerging names. Within the first group are the Estonian Riho Unt who has been in the sector for more than four decades and will compete with The Wings, the American Patrick Smith with Beyond Noh or the Swedish Niki Lindroth von Bahr who with Something to Remember was present in Berlin, Toronto and SXSW. Among the new talents, the Canadian Noam Sussman who has worked for Disney TV and Google, with his second short film Dream Cream, will also be seen in Segovia, the debut of Gísli Darri Halldórsson (Yes-People); This Icelander was part of the team of the short film nominated for the Oscar: Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty.
The competitive section of the Festival has the already announced jury made up of the French producer Edwina Liard (founder of the IKKI Films production company), the Franco-Colombian Melissa Vega (partner of the Dandelooo distribution and production company), the Brazilian Paula Taborda dos Guaranys (Director of Contents for Planeta Junior) and the Spanish Jorge Sanz (Director of the Aguilar de Campoo International Short Film Festival). An edition that will keep La Cárcel Espacio de Creación as the festival's main venue and that expands its offer to the city with open-air screenings with a drive-in movie theater; an appointment that will culminate on October 4th when the list of winners is screened.
